Goal & Learning Outcomes

Special Education Leaders will develop immediate, short-term and long-term action steps toward implementing GREAT instruction for students with disabilities.  This session builds on O'Connor's presentation in December 2017.  

Participants will:

  • Refresh their knowledge of GREAT instruction for students with disabilities.
  • Outline the characteristics of effective vs ineffective initiatives.
  • Determine what it takes to change teacher practices.
  • List 10 steps to build GREAT instruction for students with disabilities across their school. 
  • Develop priority immediate, quick win short-term, and lasting long-term steps in their own content for implementation.

 

About the Presenter

John O’Connor has led state and district-wide initiatives in his 28 years in public education. He started as a teacher of students with orthopedic impairments and served as a Program Manager with the Georgia Department of Education and in a variety of administrative positions in local school districts: Assistant Director for Special Education, Director for Interventions, Executive Director for Special Services, and Assistant Superintendent for Student Services. He has over 20 publications, including four books, a textbook chapter, a desk guide and many articles. His most important job is being the father of two teenage sons.
